WhiskyStories: Watch The Most Comprehensive Whisky Series In The World

You now have the opportunity to visit some of the world’s finest distilleries through the most ambitious whisky documentary project ever conducted.

WhiskyStories: Where No One Has Gone

Although there is no consensus on whether whisky originated in Ireland or Scotland, one thing is certain: it comes from the British Isles. What is also widely agreed upon is that today, the world's best, most exclusive, and most extraordinary whiskies come from Scotland. While proud whisky- and whiskey-producing nations such as Ireland, Japan, and Canada all produce outstanding expressions, Scotland brings something extra to the table – holding nearly all the significant records for the world’s oldest and most expensive whiskies.

“Whisky” has been distilled in Scotland for about 1,000 years, although the first written records of the word itself do not appear until roughly 500 years later. Still, it wasn't until 1775 that Glenturret was officially established – today credited as Scotland’s oldest distillery.

There are now around 150 active Scottish single malt distilleries, and the list continues to grow. From legendary names to small, unknown producers making whisky for blends.

Through *WhiskyStories*, RareWine Group has created the most comprehensive and ambitious documentary series ever made about Scotch whisky. It gives you the opportunity to explore some of Scotland’s finest distilleries, dive deep into their histories, discover flavour profiles, and step behind doors normally closed to the public.

*WhiskyStories* takes you beyond the facade – to the people who create, share, and shape the narrative of whisky. It’s a conversation among whisky lovers, for whisky lovers. Along the way, you’ll meet distillers, industry insiders, and even the most influential and powerful woman in whisky today: Master Blender of Johnnie Walker, Emma Walker – featured in an extremely exclusive interview.

The RareWine production team spent over two years of work, dozens of flights, and countless hours driving through the Highlands – and the journey is far from over. No one has ever gone this far to document the extraordinary stories of whisky in Scotland. And now, you’re invited to come along.

The Greatest Misunderstanding In Whisky: What Is Single Malt?

”Single malt" is often misunderstood as whisky made from a single type of grain, but the term actually refers to where and how the whisky is made - not the number of grains used.

A single malt whisky must meet two criteria:

  1. It must be made from 100% malted barley (not corn, wheat, or other grains).
  2. It must be produced at one single distillery (hence the “single”).

So, “single” means one distillery, and “malt” means only malted barley. It can be made from many barrels and aged in various casks, as long as it all comes from the same distillery and is made exclusively from malted barley.

WhiskyStories: Explore Johnnie Walker And The Four Corners Of Scotland

WhiskyStories is set to explore the four whisky corners of Scotland, visiting some of the most influential and important distilleries throughout Highlands, Islands, Lowlands, and Speyside. Each of these different regions has its own characteristics and taste profiles, which you can learn more about in the series. Each of the distilleries has its own interpretation of the characteristics of its region, and those distilleries producing whisky for blends are shaping and defining the blends they are included in – blends like Chivas Regal, J&B, and Johnnie Walker.

Johnnie Walker is the world’s best-selling Scotch whisky and is defining the category. WhiskyStories explores the connection between Johnnie Walker and the distilleries contributing to the flavours and their importance to Johnnie Walker, from the affordable Red Label to the premium Blue Label.

Moreover, WhiskyStories brings you up close with Johnnie Walker Master Blender Emma Walker in a rare and honest interview, taking you behind the labels and into the thoughts of one of the most influential individuals in the whisky industry.

These characteristics define the blended whiskies that their distilleries are contributing to – for example

Case story: Visit Port Ellen

In the late 1980s, the original Port Ellen Distillery closed its doors for the last time and faded into legend as a cult whisky for true connoisseurs. After more than two decades of silence and a historically costly renovation, Port Ellen rose from the ashes like a phoenix – and once again, the fires were lit beneath the distillery’s stills.

Once a month, the public is granted a rare opportunity to step inside the distillery. But RareWine, as the first film crew allowed access, takes you through doors normally closed to most – offering a journey through the echoes of whisky history and a tasting of extraordinarily rare expressions drawn from Port Ellen’s original stocks.
